The forbidden rules of your algorithm

Social media experts Kirsten Jassies and Maartje Blijleven are spilling all the tea on how to play nice with Instagram and TikTok. Post the wrong thing, and you could be in for some major headaches – think your audio getting snatched, your reach dropping to zero, or worst-case, your account vanishing into thin air! 😱

What's up with these “forbidden” content rules that get your algorithm all worked up? Let’s dive into Instagram first and see what you should definitely avoid!

Algorithmic Censoring 🚫

First off, DO NOT go hashtag wild! Using more than 30 hashtags is a big no-no, and it could lead to your post getting blocked. Plus, sharing copyrighted music can hurt your reach – but this only applies if the music is already in your video.

Let’s Talk About 🤭 Baby!

Ah, the good old Instagram censorship. You can be creative all you want around spicy words, but Instagram’s got eyes everywhere! And yep, male nips are A-OK, but anything beyond that is a hard pass for Insta. Also, watch out for alcohol in your pics and vids – those are flagged as 18+ and get limited visibility.

Medical Content🩸

Imagine a medical account posts a video of an open-heart surgery where blood is clearly visible. Even though the content is shared for educational purposes, Instagram might flag it as too graphic and automatically blur the video to protect sensitive viewers. The same goes for photos of severe injuries, like deep cuts, which can quickly get blocked or blurred, even if they’re shared from a medical perspective.

So be cautious with this kind of content because the line between educational and "too intense" is strictly monitored by Instagram’s algorithms.

Now, on to TikTok!

Boring Content = No Views 🙅‍♀️

TikTok is all about grabbing attention immediately, so if your video doesn’t have a hook in the first 3 seconds, you’re risking low views and limited reach. Keep it snappy and fun!

Quality Over Quantity 🎯

Forget the myth of posting 3x a day. More isn’t always better. Posting too often can make your content sloppy, and nobody wants that. Stick to one solid, relevant post a day for max impact!

Re-posting = Spamming

Not getting the engagement you want? Resist the urge to delete and repost. TikTok sees that as spammy behavior, and trust us, no social media platform vibes with spam. It’s a one-way ticket to a lower reach!

Mastering the algorithm is all about avoiding common mistakes and knowing what to post to keep your content thriving. Of course, here at WE LIKE YOU, we know these rules like we wrote them ourselves! So we’ll make sure your social media stays shining bright.✨
